Purpose and Scope of TPS, MIS, DSS, ESS and ERP

TPS (Transaction Processing System)
Transaction processing is the way of how organizations divides work into individual and indivisible operations. The Transaction Processing System also known as the transaction server is system software or software-hardware combined which is used to support the processing of transactions. TPS has 3 functional areas:

1. System runtime functions – this ensures the availability, integrity and security of data. Fast response time and high transaction can also be expected.

2. System administration functions – this gives administrative support that lets its users configure, manage and monitor their transaction systems.

3. Application development functions – this function includes accessing data, performing inter-computer communications and designing computer interface.

MIS (Management Information Systems)
It is the combination of human and computer based resources which as an outcome gives a result in the storage, collection, retrieval, communication and use of data to efficient management of operations and business planning for purposes. It is also use to easily get special reports from the system. The main purpose of MIS is to help managers getting a result from their own performances. MIS usually shows the actual data over against planned results and the previous year’s results measuring the progress against goals. DSS (Decision Support System)

It is a computer-based information system which is use to support the decision-making activities in an organization or business. It is also a key point in being consistent to a decision as sometimes people’s mood can affect their way of deciding. DSS also helps to put or execute a formal method to take input data and produce a steady and impartial decision that stands up to scrutiny. This system is also good for analyzing data, summarizing and supply recommendations.

ESS (Executive Support System)
It is a reporting tool or software which allows converting the organization’s data into useful summary reports. The mentioned reports are usually generally used by managers in executive levels so they can access quickly the reports coming from different departments in an organization.

ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)
It is a strategic business solution that integrates all businesses functions including manufacturing, finance and distribution. ERP is also a customized, package software based system which handles the majority of an enterprise’s information system requirements. It gives a software architecture that runs the flow of information among all functions within the enterprise.

Business Value of a DSS
DSS provides some operational benefits for businesses. Their contribution in improving decision-making which involves unstructured and semi-structured problems relating to business processes helps a lot. Some of its business values are:

Manage information resources to solve simple to difficult problems. Contribute in improving business workflow.
Capacity to support multiple business operations within a one-stop service system.
